Age: approx 3 months (March 2018)
Breed: Shepherd mix (possibly Husky or German Shepherd)
Opal is a precious, fluffy snowball (if snowballs had pointy dagger-teeth!) who was found abandoned in the woods near one of our volunteers’ neighborhood. She’s around three months old, and our best guess is that she is an Australian cattle dog mixed with husky, maybe German Shepherd.
Not only is Opal completely adorable, like many white “piebald” dogs, she is completely deaf. Not to worry, however, because deaf puppies are just as smart, capable, and trainable as puppies who can hear. In fact, some may even prefer deaf puppies, as they can’t hear you wake up in the middle of the night when you raid the fridge (those “normal” puppies will rat you out, every time)!
We’ll have more information to share with you all about Opal soon. She will need a family committed to training and exercise, as none of her potential mixes are known for laziness. Opal will go home with at least two rounds of age-appropriate vaccines, dewormed, and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $350, and she is currently fostered in North Augusta, SC.
Age: 4 yrs old
Meet Hokie a super sweet and affectionate 4 year old mini-Aussie (or Mini American Shepherd) boy. He and 5 other dogs, including his brother, Buckeye, were found on Christmas Day by their owner’s family. She had unexpectedly passed away in the night. While her family and friends tried to take care of the 6 dogs in her absence, they felt like Hokie and his brother were not receiving the attention they so desperately deserved and made the difficult decision to surrender them to rescue.
Hokie is a wonderful and smart boy – once you get to know him. After the only home he ever knew AND his brother, he had a bit of a doggie meltdown in his foster home – who could blame him? He has since settled in quite well and will require an experienced adopter who is willing to go slow with him and help build his confidence. Once he gets to know them, he enjoys the company of other friendly, playful dogs and would do best with a submissive or passive dog-sibling – he did initially display some resource guarding of his foster mom but has since learned to share. He does great with herding-dog savvy cats who won’t run from a curious pup. He was previously fostered with young children, but may do better in a quieter home with children over 12.
Hokie does great in the car and does well with grooming (clipping nails and brushing!). He is fully potty trained and is left loose house 24/7 – he is not a fan of the crate and exhibited increased anxiety when he has to spend lengthy periods cooped up. He does well on the leash and is improving on his pulling tendency with each walk. Hoke would be GREAT for an athletic adopter who likes to go on hikes or runs and does have a nice “off switch” and is content to curl up on the couch with you after a long day. He is a Velcro and happily follows his foster parents from room to room.
Hokie is UTD on vaccines, microchipped, and neutered. He is currently fostered in Easley, SC and his adoption fee is $300.
If you are an approved applicant and are interested in Hokie please contact the adoption committee. If you are interested and have not yet applied please visit our website for adoption procedures and application.
Name: Baby Ruth
Age: 1-2 years old
Breed: Aussie/Border mix
Weight: 42 lbs
Meet Baby Ruth who is now available for adoption.
I am a sweet 1-2 year old Aussie/Border mix who was brought into a SC shelter by animal control but have come a long way in my foster home!
I am a low/medium energy, extremely shy/timid but slowly coming out of my shell thanks to my foster mom, brother and sisters. I love, love, love playing tug of war, running around the back yard or just lying under the trees watching squirrels with my foster brother and sisters. In the house, I play with the many toys (I can’t seem to pick just one), chew on antlers or just stretch out for a nap!
I am 42 pounds, up to date with my shots, microchipped and was recently spayed (ouch!). My foster mom says I have a very kind face, beautiful coat and I do have a long, fluffy tail! I am housebroken and prefer the floor to furniture. I bark when I play and if my foster mom is not paying attention, when I have to go potty. I like to sleep in my cage at night as it is soft and warm and safe.
Since I am extremely shy/timid, I would prefer a quiet home with no children or children over 12. I really want a brother or sister who will be my companion, play and help me adjust to my new home. A solid fenced back yard to run and play would be wonderful! An experienced adopter who is willing to go slow and continue to build my confidence.
My foster mom lives outside of Wilmington, NC. My adoption fee is $300. If you are an approved applicant and want to meet me, please contact the adoption committee. If you are interested, but have not applied, please visit our website for adoption procedures and application.
Age: approx 1 yr
Breed: Mini Aussie/Sheltie mix
This scruffy looking little rebel is Han Solo! He is a one year old mini Aussie mix who gives the best hugs to his foster family! This adorable little smuggler…errr…snuggler
Han is on the lower energy side and is very content hanging on the couch with his foster family. He does enjoy romping around the yard with his furry foster siblings but hasn’t shown much interest in actually playing with them and would prefer non-pushy siblings who respect his independence. Han has not been introduced to cats but would most likely be fine based on his interactions with his canine and chicken foster siblings. Han is cautious when meeting new people but warms up quickly – especially if they have treats!
Han is crate and house trained and currently learning to walk on a leash. Due to Han’s lack of socialization prior to coming to rescue and his timid nature, he would do best in a home without children under 12 and with a fenced in yard. Han would make a great addition to a quiet household who is looking for a low energy companion who enjoys long days of binge watching Star Wars on the couch!
Han is UTD on vaccines, neutered, and microchipped. He is currently fostered in Thomasville, NC and his adoption fee is $300.
If you are an approved applicant and are interested in Han please contact the adoption committee.
