Teak

Sweet Teak is more than just a pretty face.

Teak is a 1.5 year old, red merle, male Australian Shepherd. Prior to rescue, Teak seems to have been an outside dog with little socialization or training. Now that he is with Carolina Hearts he is rapidly picking up how to be a member of the family in his foster home – dog beds, toys, and love!

Teak has a nice moderate energy level for such a young Aussie – he loves romping around the yard, chasing squirrels, and playing with his pommie foster sister. He generally does well with other dogs, however he has shown tendency to resource guard his person. He has taken well to being corrected on this, but would do best with a family who understands this behavior and how to work with it. Teak does well with the dog-savvy kitties in his foster home and has even been known to let them snuggle up – though he might be enticed to chase a running feline.

As a result of his past, Teak can be very wary of strangers upon first meeting and takes time to warm up. He is still learning to trust people and needs a family who will be patient with him on his journey. He will come to his foster family for pets and love – but occasionally shies away from quick movements toward him. He does well with stern – not harsh – correction and has picked up a number of things quite quickly. As a young Aussie, he can be a bit stubborn at times and will need consistent routine and training to be the best he can be. Teak is learning to walk on a leash and once he is comfortable will make a great walking, running, or hiking companion. This boy has a beautiful gait and can clear a potted plant with ease – agility would be a great way to bolster his confidence once he’s mastered basic obedience. While he still needs coaxing to go into his crate, he is quiet and calm once he is in. He is mostly trustworthy when left loose – so long as there are no tasty shoes or trash cans he can get into!

Teak will do best in an Aussie experienced home with no children (under 12) as he does have a fairly high herding drive and will nip while playing. He needs a family committed to continuing his training and socialization. While we cannot be sure about his past, it is evident he will need time and love to fully blossom into the amazing boy his foster parents know he can be!

Teak is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $250. Teak is currently fostered in Charlotte, NC.
